BookMarc Creative is the business banner for the award-winning agency based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Nan Bookless and Liz DeMarco founded the company in 2003, and Liz has continued as the sole proprietor of the business after Nan’s retirement in 2018.
BookMarc works with for- and not-for-profit organizations across a wide range of industries, locally, nationally, and internationally. Our expertise and successes lie in our ability to take a company or organization to the next level—from start-ups to viable entities, and from viable entities to established brands—creating a cache of tools for them to expand and grow.
BookMarc is known for the thoughtful and imaginative development that goes into each project, reflecting the unique business goals and personalities of our clients.
With an educational background in graphic design, photography, and web design, Liz began her career as the sole in-house designer for Safety 1st, a manufacturer of child safety products (best known for its ubiquitous “Baby on Board” signs), then located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. With a desire to expand her creative opportunities, Liz joined the entrepreneurial world launching Waterloo Design which specialized in corporate identity systems, ad design, sales and marketing materials, and web design. Some of Liz’s Boston-based clients included Safety 1st, Harvard Eating Disorders Center, Lifeline Systems, and Commonwealth Films.
Liz adopted the Berkshires as her home in 2000, expanding her client list to include a solid base of regional businesses.
In addition to her love of design, Liz has a passion for travel which began in childhood. She has visited 46 states, most of western and central Europe, Bermuda, and Fiji. In recent years she has explored Australia, Alaska, and sailed the islands of the Cyclades and Dodecanese, always keeping an eye open for her next adventure.
Liz has also studied at Johnson & Wales University and is a trained pastry chef. Play your cards right and you may be the recipient of a sweet treat!
Nan Bookless is the co-founder, former partner, and designer emeritus for BookMarc Creative.
A native of the Berkshires, Nan began her graphics career as a freelance designer and illustrator focusing on design for print. Her subsequent employment at Quality Printing in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, first as a staff artist and then as Art Director, solidified her move into the graphics industry. After a number of years at Quality, she revitalized her freelance business and was also recruited into the position of Art Director at The Women’s Times, a monthly publication for women in western Massachusetts, handling the design and layout of the newspaper and its special supplements.
Nan was interviewed in the October 2000 issue of The Crafts Report in an article titled “21 Tips for Creating Effective Advertising.” In 2003 Nan was part of a team at The Women’s Times that won the prestigious American Cancer Society Sword of Hope Award (in the magazine/periodical division) for their annual Guide to Breast Cancer Resources.
Nan is also an illustrator and small works collage artist and has shown in local and New York City galleries.
Nan retired from BookMarc in 2018.
